Built and sailed by her owner two and a half times around the world, this Colin Archer has proved to be a go anywhere yacht. These yachts are incredibly powerful sailing yachts, any conditions being no challenge.

L'ESCARGOT is RS design 22.


At the beginning Rick started with keel, stem post, stern post and deadwood, all 18 inch laminated Swedish oak, built upside down on a strongback. When he laid the hull up it was with with four layers of Swedish fir, the first layer 12mm and laid up horizontally, the second layer, 8mm, glued diagonally, the third 8mm layer glued 90 degrees to layer two and the last layer was 12mm laid horizontally. Next the whole hull was glassed with a 4mm skin then turned and the inside glassed the same. This produced an extremely strong and durable hull which remains in great condition today. The decks are 1 inch Finnish birch ply on laminated deck beams, also overlaid with 4mm glassfibre.

This year the mast was removed and completely refurbished and now stands with all new Dyneema standing rigging. All through hull valves have been changed to Marelon types.

Vast accommodation below. She sleeps seven readily, full forward are two cabins, the starboard cabin currently set aside for storage, the other cabin is a good double. Between these cabins is the bathroom with great headroom. The saloon is caverrnous and has big and comfortable settees. The galley is a proper sea going design with the navigation station opposite. Moving aft, the owner's cabin has one single berth, a seat and a secure fore/aft double berth.

All lighting is LED. There is abundant Swedish Fir in the interior fitout and soles are African hardwood.

Two burner gas stove, hotplate, oven and grill. Stainless steel sink, pressurised cold water. No fridge.

Electrics & Batteries:
The yacht runs on her 12VDC system alone and has a four battery house bank, totaling 400 amps. XANTREX LINK 1000 battery management. Engine start is a 100 amp YUASA. FREEDOM 1500 watt inverter/charger. Two 80 watt solar panels c/w SUNFORCE solar regulator.. Portable petrol genset.

Gaff rigged ketch. The original wooden mizzen has been replaced with an aluminium one, plus an anodised ally main boom. The main mast is a solid section Swedish Fir which was was rolled and treated for six years before setting and shows no sign of deterioration or rot and is a showpiece. It was un stepped in 2015 and checked then re varnished. All standing rigging was replaced at the same time, new DYNEEMA.
